Higos are a distinctive race of C. japonica with a splayed-out flare of stamens in a single flower. From the Japanese island of Kyushu, they were an integral part of the Samurai culture, in which the flowers were an emblem of a warrior´s courage and were often planted on his grave. Many old varieties have thus been reintroduced from old cemeteries. They are used for bonsai in Japan.
